ILM welcomes NICE guidance on mental health in the workplace

05 November 2009

Penny de Valk, Chief Executive of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), has welcomed the latest National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance on mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.

“We welcome the recommendations made today by NICE.  Mental health and wellbeing is a serious issue for employers and, as this analysis shows, UK organisations are currently not well equipped to deal with it.

“The workplace culture of long hours and presenteeism is outmoded and needs to change. Modern technology now allows employees to work more flexibly and managers who fail to embrace this risk being left behind. This is an issue that must be tackled from the top down, it is essential that managers come to terms with the impact of stress, depression and mental health on employees.

“Good management is not just about outputs and attendance figures, it is arguably more important to have emotional intelligence and display a genuine concern for staff wellbeing. If employees come to work but leave their hearts and minds at the door, this is a real cost to business, as the report clearly demonstrates.”

Research published by ILM last December, revealed that 60% of managers did not actively choose to take on their position, while one in four lacked confidence in their own ability. These statistics indicate that many managers need to be better trained to help them deal with this crucial role, including how to tackle employee issues such as stress and mental health problems.
