Research & Agenda Setting

ILM sits at the leading edge of new thinking about leadership and management, and the development of tomorrow’s leaders and managers. We investigate and analyse current practices in leadership and management, with a special emphasis on their effectiveness in enabling organisations to perform successfully in the modern global economy.

ILM doesn't just write about policy and best practice: we play a leading role in developing innovative strategic responses to the challenges facing modern organisations. This role is underpinned by a significant research capability. We have our own specialist staff able to undertake research projects and we also commission research and work in partnership with other organisations, where appropriate.

ILM’s research activities range from undertaking surveys into a range of  issues that challenge leaders and managers in their everyday roles, to more significant research projects to develop new ways of thinking and working. We also draw together and disseminate research and innovative approaches to leadership and management from around the world. As well as undertaking research on our own account, we also provide research and consultancy services to other organisations, in both the public and private sector.

One of the greatest resources available to ILM is the knowledge and skills of our own networks of staff and consultants, staff in the centres delivering ILM qualifications, and the Institute’s members themselves - practicing managers in large, medium and small organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors. We will increasingly be drawing on this substantial knowledge and skills base to create a web-accessible archive of information and ideas.
